As an Eco-Wonderland Costa Rica shelters a staggering amount of
biodiversity and many unspoiled natural wonders. Known for its
progressive conservation policies, Costa Rica provides a vital habitat
to thousands of plant and animal species - in fact, the country has an
estimated 5% of the world's animal species. Over a quarter of the land
in Costa Rica is protected from potential exploitation by national
parks, wildlife refuges, marine sanctuaries, national reserves,
conservation areas and biological reserves. Verdant rainforests,
mangrove swamps, cloud forests, spectacular beaches, volcanoes,
waterfalls and coral reefs are just some of the many habitats protected
by the national parks and reserves. On this family trip we will explore
3 distinct provinces of Costa Rica, including the inland area of La
Fortuna, and Guanacaste and the Osa Peninsula on the Pacific Coast.
Activities include a full day hike to the Hule Lagoon at the base of the
Cerro Congo Volcano, 6 miles from the famous Poas Volcano. This area is
renowned for its excellent trekking trails due to the variety of scenery
and terrain, from clay, to dirt, volcanic rock, and grasslands in a
rainforest. We will travel to Nosara for 3 nights where we will do some
hiking and a canopy tour traversing majestic mountain ridges and
valleys, soaring high above multiple ravines, with breathtaking vistas
of rivers, waterfalls and the Pacific Ocean. While in Nosara we will
also visit a local wildlife refuge to learn about rescued monkey
rehabilitation or turtle nesting. We will take a chartered flight to the
Osa Peninsula and stay 3 nights in Drakes Bay, at a hotel sumerged in
the jungle and accessible only by boat. While in Drakes Bay we will
explore Corcovado National Park and snorkel the coral reefs of Cano
Isalnd. There will be free time to kayak, explore magrove swamps, take a
surfing lesson, relax in a hammock on your porch listening to birds and
monkeys, or play at the beach. The cost is ~$3075 per adult, double
occupancy, $1855 for children 13-17 and $1430 for children under 12. The
trip fee includes lodging at a hotel near San Jose, and eco-resorts in
Nosara and Drakes Bay, most meals, chartered flight from Nosara to
Drakes Bay and then to San Jose, all ground transportation, canopy tour,
Hule Lagoon hike, full day in Corcovado National Park, snokeling trip at
Cano Island, all guides (and tips), and emergency medical and evacuation
insurance. Not included are international airfare (~$350-450) and some
lunches. All activities suitable for 5 and up, but please inquire if
your child is younger.
